Ed Hardy Clothing is an eponymously titled accessories and apparel brand that owes its origin to the Californian tattoo artist Don Ed Hardy. After retiring from the art of tattooing Ed Hardy has mainly focused on painting, drawing, print making and other types of non tattoo art forms.
Origins
The artist came up with the idea of commercializing his art by putting his art work into his own brand of clothing and accessories. Ku USA Inc was awarded the license to launch his clothing and accessories brand in 2002 using his art work. The Ed Hardy Clothing collection became so popular after its launch that the Saks companies started taking active interest in the brand.
The Ed Hardy Clothing collection was launched in 2004 by Christian Audigier who procured the licensing rights to manufacture clothing based on Ed Hardy’s paintings and imagery. Ed Hardy Clothing came to be known as a high profile fashion brand when the brand was directly marketed to media figures and celebrities. Audigier also adopted the marketing trick of opening exclusive Ed Hardy stores in upscale fashionable locales.
